ABOUT 33rd JOE GUNTHER MYSTERY, “Fall Guy”

Archer Mayor, author of the New York Times bestselling author of the Vermont-based Detective Joe Gunther series, will appear at the Adams Free Library, 92 Park St., in Adams, MA. Mayor will be discussing and autographing his new novel, Fall Guy, on November 3rd at 6:00pm. This program is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities, which provided funding through the National Endowment for the Humanities via the American Rescue Plan.

Archer Mayor’s critically-acclaimed Vermont-based series of police novels featuring Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro police department has its roots in actual field experience.  Over the past 30 years he has worked as a firefighter/EMT, a police officer, and a death investigator for Vermont’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.  His writing is also informed by his diverse background as a scholar, editor, researcher and photographer, as well as a political advance man and a medical illustrator. [He is a graduate of Yale University. (?)]

In Archer Mayor’s latest novel, Fall Guy, a high-end stolen car is discovered in Vermont filled with items from a far-flung two stage burglary spree. In the trunk is the body of the burglar – one Don Kalfus. Joe Gunther and his team from the Vermont Bureau of Investigation are called in to solve the murder, but are faced with the complication that the victim was probably killed in New Hampshire.

A further complication soon emerges: within the pile of stolen cell phones found in the car is evidence of a notorious unsolved child abduction case from years earlier.  The seemingly simple case has become more complex and deadlier, leading Gunther’s team to be pulled from the New Hampshire coast to near the Canadian border as they attempt to find and capture the psychopath responsible for a tangled, historical web of misery, betrayal, and loss.

In 2016, the author received the Robert B. Parker Award, and he is also a recipient of the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.  The New York Times calls Archer Mayor “the boss man on procedures.”  The Adams Free Library is excited to be hosting this free public event, which promises to be both informative and entertaining and a unique opportunity to meet one of America’s best mystery/crime writers.
